I am studying for a big state exam to get a raise at work. I cant seem to concentrate when I study.?

I already took the test once and failed. I cant afford not to pass this next time. Does anyone have any tips that worked for them during a big test. Also what is the best thing to do the night before the test?

well the night before, you shouldn’t study at all..it will just mess you up. You should definitly try and get a good night sleep, even go to bed an hour early. Also eat a good breakfast the morning of the exam.

tips…use flash cards as much as you can. Even draw pictures on some of them to help you with a reference. You can also use rhymes that will help or sentances…example: My Very Elegant Mother Just Sat Upon Nine Porcupines…it is the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupitar, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto..use the first letter of each word of the sentance to remember the planets in order away from the sun….

hope those ideas help..good luck on your test

– What’s the easiest, most pleasant way for you to learn? By reading it, hearing it, doing it? Do you like to be still while studying, move around, listen to music? Depending on how you answer, it will be easier to study in different ways. For example, if it works better to hear it, get a small cassette recorder and tape yourself reading it. Or get a study partner who will read to you and ask questions

– Agree with writing things down, not studying the night before, and sleeping well the night before if possible. If you can’t get your mind to let you sleep, try imagining yourself in a beautiful place – see it, hear it, taste it, smell it, touch it (or as many as apply). If that doesn’t work, try tensing each muscle in your body from head to foot or foot to head (your preference) and then letting each part of your body become very heavy like sand bags are dragging you down, or very light like you’re floating on clouds (your choice). Both techniques are self-hypnosis/imagery which are harmless but can get your brain to shut off and let you go to sleep quickly, in case you have trouble with that.

– If you’re having trouble reading it, might skim it, go back and take brief notes, then make a fun game for yourself, like Jeopardy or a crossword puzzle etc. (or even just a practice test), which has questions and answers on it you think will be on the test. Can help a lot to get a study group together to do this too, as well as ask and answer questions of each other. If no one else is taking it, would a friend help you? Couldn’t hurt, and might even be nice to see what you get out of a perspective from someone who’s never seen the material you’re studying.

– Check out where you are studying. Is it quiet if you need quiet? Noisy if you need noise? Just comfy enough, or putting you to sleep? Uncomfortable enough to distract you from studying?

– Does what you’re reading come with practice questions and tests, summaries, key points, etc.? If so, these are very useful to skim through, then read the details, then skim through afterwards to refresh your memory.

That’s about all I can think of right now – hope it helps! (:

Good luck! (:

This is going to be rather interesting but is something I learned at a job one time when studing for such things.

When you start to lose concentration go back and look at the words you have read and find the one you do not know the definition too and look it up. so you will need a dictionary but sometimes very simple words can be misunderstood and throw off the rest of what you are reading.
