Depends on the grade and the teachers. Mostly you will get a list of class room rules and supplies you will need for the specific class. The teacher usually just talks about what you will be learning that year and what not. The first day is usually fairly easy, but i have had an occasional teacher hand out a book on the first day and have us read and take notes for the next class. Most likely though it will be easy and relaxed.

At my school, its no walk in the park.
The first day, you go over syllabi (an overveiw of the material and decorum that will be presented in each class). Than at the end of the class they get you started on a reading assignment, assign a math lesson, or assign a chapter to take notes on.
At my school, teachers are required to assign homework on the first day of school. It sucks.

I wait until the big yellow bus is out of sight, then I do a little dance of joy and meet other moms at the local diner for a cup of coffee to celebrate our freedom! YAY! the kids are back in school!!
