Recess in gradeschool?

With the number of people in the United States that are obese, why are more and more schools eliminating Recess? I personally believe that children need PE every afternoon, Recess every morning, and a rotating scedule of art and music so one is had every day. Even if PE is 15 min, recess is 15 min, and art/music is 30min, it’s not cutting into the school day that much and is very beneficial.

What do you think? Besides having healthy school lunches, is it important to have recess and PE?

Where I live they still have recess and PE. In the elementary school, they get a morning break of 10 – 15 minutes where they play outside and then after lunch they get to play outside again. PE rotates with Art & Music so the kids have PE every 3rd day. In the middle school, PE is required but it is every day for 9 weeks, I think. They rotate art for 9 weeks, music for 9 weeks, and health for 9 weeks. I’m pretty sure each one is 9 weeks, I know they rotate. It is important to for our kids to have physical activity and to be taught about good, healthy habits. I don’t know why an elementary school would eliminate recess or PE.

I think a short 15-minute recess is good because if you keep dragging on, you end up with hungry and bored kids. Lolz. As for PE, PE is also important, but 15min per session doesn’t cut it and isn’t even enough to break a single sweat on those kids! Here in my country, we’d have PE once or twice a week for 2 or 3-hour sessions, teaching the kids to play sports or traditional games, or even dancing lessons.

..the problem is that schools are not concerned about health. They want the kids in the class room more so they can teach them how to pass a standardized test. That is ALL the U.S. public school is good for!

I have a kid in the 3rd grade and most of what she knows I taught her because the school would not. If it is not on the government issued standardized test they refuse to teach it.

The government rates the schools success based on how many kids pass the standerized test, and there is nothing on them about recess or pe!

i strongly agree with you. if they make a big deal about being obese why are they not doing nothing besides letting us know the percentage and syaing ppl should diet. instead they should focus on the young ppl and help them by doing more phsical things in scholol if they think obesedy is getting more and more ppl

but there is no way to get that out to them
