standard parabola is one in which the focus is (a,0) and the directrix has equation x+a=0.

work out the equation of the curve from the definition: a parabola is the name of the curve of the set of points (x,y) in the cartesian plane that satisfy the condition of being equidistant from a fixed point and a fixed line.

The distance from the point (3,0) is (x-3)2 + y2

and the distance from the line x+5=0 is x+5

so the points of the curve are those that satisfy the equation
