Most people with a master’s in library science become librarians. The most common places for librarians to work are college/university, public, and school libraries. There are also many opportunities at special libraries (libraries that don’t fit into the previous three categories, such as as non-profit organizations, museums, and corporations).

Librarians perform a variety of functions that all revolve around helping people find and use information. This includes acquiring resources, organizing these resources, providing access, and teaching people how to find and use information resources. Depending upon the size of the organization you work for, you may do all of these things or you may specialize in one or more areas. Common specializations in a traditional library include reference, cataloging, collection development, library instruction, access services, and special collections.

Opportunities exist for those with an MLS outside of libraries, too. Organizations that provide information to the public or who need help organizing and accessing information need librarians (although they may not specify that in a job description). Companies that develop and sell information products to schools and libraries also hire librarians.
