Math…the Fear of Students?

Why are so many students afraid of math courses? I say teachers have a lot to do with the fact that most students find math boring and hard to grasp.

I agree. I don’t know very many math teachers who can really explain math well to people like me who just don’t get it and need it explained a couple of times and in different ways. It’s like they have a one-track mind when it comes to teaching math, and that one track is THEIR way of learning and doing math. Any students in the class who think and process information differently get lost along the way. Students also have a hard time finding the relevance of some of the math classes they are required to take. Perhaps if they could see the real-world application, they might be more motivated to learn it, especially if it were taught to them in an interesting and well-executed manner.

I think it is more to do with the fact that math is like painting a picture with your mind, a mental science so to speak.

The concepts thought needs to be visualzed and then understood. Unlike some other subject where the things that are thought are right there in front of you (physical).

Due to this, teachers have a hard time projecting the math concepts to their students. At the same time, students have a hard time visualizing the concepts the teacher is trying to project.

As an experiment, try visualizing a picture in your mind and then tell another person about that picture by just describing its aspects. Then ask that person to draw the picture you have just described. You will see it is different from what you really have pictured in your mind.

That is just like teaching math.

I actually do find math hard to grasp. Most of the formulas are to complicated to remember. Also many kids don’t like math is because you have to do a lot of work just to solve one answer. And some kids find math boring because they don’t find math interesting. Many kids don’t find any history in math. In History class you learn about the way people lived in the past. In science you learn about interesting things on how everything works. And in Lang. Arts, you learn how to read amazing books. In math you just learn how to solve things. I personally don’t like school, especially math because it is boring, and it is hard to do.

Math was one of the only subjects I enjoyed because I could sit for hours solving problems and equations.

I viewed it as a useful tool that I could use in the future unlike Social Studies or History because that always get an upgrade or changes.

Having taught ESL and TESOL/TEC, it is one of my well-known DON’Ts, and that i visit ascertain why you’ve complications which include your scholars. reading aloud at school is probable between the WORST issues an ESL instructor can do and that i will clarify why: a million. reading aloud places the student interior the spotlight and if he/she makes blunders, then 20-40 pairs of eyes are on them it is really intimidating and it may quite ruin their self belief and self-worth. 2. reading aloud isn’t reading. this is at perfect a pronunciation workout and not something else. 3. in case you get scholars to study one after an different in a particular order (alphabetically for his or her call or by utilizing seat) then the different scholars are not from now on even listening yet counting and training their ability strains so even as their turn comes they can do an outstanding interest. 4. reading aloud is not any doubt one of the fastest and least complicated thanks to make scholars HATE reading and being in an ESL type. i’d sugest that instead of reading out loud, ask the scholars to both write memories in communities and then they can study them aloud to their classmates. Or have silent reading for 10-quarter-hour and ask them to summarize of their own words what they have study. Have the scholars herald a short tale they have got here upon and browse it to their classmates in a “tale-telling” type. sturdy success

It also has a lot to do with the motivation(s) of the teachers and how they choose to explain the concepts.
