Some colleges are rigorous and others are not.

Some students are well prepared and others are not.

A large percentage of students, however, are required to take remedial classes. Many drop out of college.

Based on my own professional knowledge, plus industry news, it’s true that alarm bells are going off at major colleges and universities. There have been hundreds of articles from newspapers around the world exclaiming that ‘mark inflation’, ‘academic incompetence’, and other factors are allowing students to enter colleges without the skills necessary. According to these articles, students that used to get 90s in high school are suddenly finding themselves flailing through college.

However, you have to understand how the college/university system works before worrying yourself. Unless you put absolutely no effort into your studies (or are truly stupid), once you get accepted into an institution it is very difficult to “fail yourself out”.

If you find that you weaknesses in certain areas, such as maths or languages, most institutions offer remedial classes that teach the fundamentals and bring you up to speed.

In short, despite the media frenzy over the issue, whether students are ready for the rigors of college should not be our main question. Instead, we should be questioning if students have the necessary marks in high school to be admitted into college. Once they get in, numerous fallbacks are in place which will allow disadvantaged ‘mark inflated’ students to learn what they need to and succeed.
