How do they determine which pictures they will feature on a dictionary?

I was looking through The American Heritage Dictionary and now I’m curious 🙂

They hold 12-hour meetings per picture and fight to the death if there is a challenging opinion.

Editorial board.

Sometimes, it’s because the board feels that “a picture is worth a thousand words” and will include a picture just to make it easier to describe.

Usually, though, it’s simply because they have a picture. Really.
