National Honor Society?

What are the standards to get into NHS at your high school, such as GPA wise? I’m in IB and my scores are lower than those who are in AP, and I believe I should be in it, but I’m not. I’m in the top 10 percent, and there are around 4000 students at my school, but only few students are in honor society. Do you think that a 4.0 GPA requirement is too high?

Academic achievement is only a small part of the NHS. I remember in my school that by grades, we only needed roughly a B average unweighted. However, we also needed positive recommendations from faculty members (we were given 10 recommendation sheets to give to faculty members of our choosing. However, at least 8 I think had to be positive). We also needed to prove we were involved in a minimum number of extracurricular activities; some of which might also have included community service. The point is, I’ve seens friends of mine who were passed over for NHS who were in the Top 20 of my class (so they obviously had the grades), simply because they didn’t have the activity/service requirements met when they were first eligible for induction.

The four ideals of the NHS, I believe are Scholarship, Citizenship, Leadership, and Service (Don’t quote me on that, it’s been over 10 years since I was inducted into it). I’m certain most all schools’ requirements for induction into the NHS reflect all of those things in some manner.

Ask your teachers and the administration at your school. It almost sounds like it might be an oversight. If you express an interest, they may correct the situation. It has been a long time since I was in high school. But I was in NHS, but I don’t remember what the requirements were. I just remember that the kids in the NHS were good kids, warm and welcoming and fun to be with. Good luck!
