Why did the pencil fall the fastest?
We did a science experiment with a rock and a pencil, holding 1 in each hand. We let them go from the same height and the pencil fell the fastest, hitting the floor first. Could someone tell me why the pencil fell the fastest?

Because the pencil is more aerodynamic. The shape of the pencil allows it to cut through the air while the shape of the rock traps air underneath it and slows it down. It has nothing to do with mass, because all objects fall at the same speed. Air resistance slows them down.

The pencil has less wind resistance than the rock. An experiment which might show this a little better would be to drop a kleenex and a pencil at the same time. Notice how the kleenex floats lazily down to the ground, but the pencil drops straight down. The kleenex obviously has wind resistance.

Less wind resistance.
In a vaccum, all objects will fall at the same speed, so the only thing that separates the falling speed of a pencil from a rock from a feather is wind resistance.
Clearly the pencil was more aerodynamic.

Not exactly sure but my guess would be the aerodynamics and shape of the pencil as to the mass of the rock.

1. You were a little late in letting go.
2. You had slightly sticky fingers.
3. One hand was slightly higher than the other
