” ‘ Las Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho’ are images of the artists’ abject countrymen, these are then allegories of a strange sort.” http://www.lopezmuseum.org.ph/artscene_zeroin_hidalgo&luna_04.html

Here’s the only other info I could find on it, with the link…not sure if you need the historical background of it, or more of an art critique?

In 1884, he contributed three canvases to the Exposicion Nacional de Bellas Artes. He won a silver medal for his “Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populache.” (The first study of this painting is part of the present collection.)

The Neoclassical period of Hidalgo begins around 1881 with paintings done in Italy such as Senador Romano and Melancolia, but his reputation in this style is established with Jovenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho (1884) and culminates several decades later with El Asesinato del Gobernador Bustamenta y su Hijo. Wow, there really is nothing else out there, except that it won a silver medal in 1884 and that it was the painting that established his reputation. You might try the library, there’s a fairly comprehensive book called “A Young Person’s Guide to Art History” that may have more info on this painting. Sorry about that!

You should have looked at Wikipedia. Here’s what it says about the painting, including the translation of the title.

His Las virgenes Cristianas expuestas al populacho (The Christian virgins Exposed to the Populace), was awarded the ninth silver medal at the 1884 Exposicion General de Bells Artes in Madrid. This showed a Group of boorish looking males mocking semi-naked female slaves, one of whom is seated in the foreground, with head bowed in misery. In the same exposition Luna’s Spoliarium was awarded a gold medal.

This painting is famous. You can probably search for it in Google Images if you don’t know what it looks like. Ask at the library about art books. Besides its artistic value, it’s a criticism of slavery,
