In my case, it was political aggression that brought my grandparents to North America. Russia annexed a section of Finland where my family lived and started forcibly conscripting men to fight in the Russian army. My great grandfather brought his family to the U.S. to escape from Russian press gangs. My grandmother was 6 years old. My grandfather left Finland when he was 19 and went to Canada, where some of his family members lived. He walked across the Canadian border into New Hampshire and settled there. My father was the first member of his family born in the USA.

While the pilgrims were fleeing religious persecution, many other groups came for completely different reasons. In fact, the Mayflower group were a very tiny number of people compared to the huge influx of people from all over the world. A great many people were neither persecuted, impoverished, uneducated nor desperate, but what fun is it to write history about rich playboys who arrived to exploit the New World? It’s much more interesting to pretend all our forefathers came to escape the big, bad king. Hogwash.
