quick question about slope- i swear im not cheating on my hw?

im really confused on theses two things and neither my book nor my teacher would clear these up for me and it sounds a bit silly but:

1. ok so lets say the slope is -3/5. since one of the numbers is negative, for the rise do u go down 3, and 5 to the right. up 3, and 5 to the left, or down 3 and 5 to the left.

2. supposed you’re slope is -2. now for the rise over run thing would this be -2/1 or would it just be like a straight vertical line on your graph.

i appreciate any help….thanks

rise over run

rise/run

If it is a negative slope, the slope will be downward from left to right.

If it is a positive slope, the slope will be upward from left to right .

If the slope is negative, like -3/5, count the rise first which will be down 3 or in a negative direction. Then count the run which will be 5 to the right or in a positive direction.

Now if you want to extend the line (-3/5) in the other direction,

look at the slope like this (3/-5). So count, 3 up in a positive direction, and 5 to the left in a negative direction.

A fraction is negative if either the numerator or denominator is negative. (-3/5 or 3/-5). Of course, if both are negative, you would have a positive slope because -1/-1 = +1.

A negative 2 slope, (-2, -2/1), you would count the same way, 2 down, 1 to the right, or 2 up, 1 to the left.

I hope this answers your question.

for slope of -3/5 it’s down three and to the right 5 spaces. This is so because slope is rise/run, so when you have a negative on one of them, it’s implied that the rise is negative. Think of also what the graph of this looks like. It goes from the upper left quadrant (quadrant 2?) t o generally the lower right hand corner.

You could also imply the negative is on the run portion. So it would be up three space, and to the LEFT 5 spaces. Either way, in the case of

-3/5x for a slope, one of them must be negative and one must be positive, and it doesn’t matter which one is.

Hope this helps 🙂

either one of these:

down 3, and 5 to the right. up 3, and 5 to the left

yes it is -2/1, any whole number is put over 1

1. you can choose either number (the denominator or numerator) you want to make positive or negative, but do not make them both negative.

2. the slope would be -2/1. and again, you can make the numerator or the denominator negative, but not both.

the numerator is rise, and the denominator is run

(if you know what i mean)

here’s a key… put the negative in the numerator always. it helps to remind you to go DOWN and then to the right!
