Learning was an importantance of the time. People started writing books in the common tongue. Before, books were only published in Latin. Only the highly educated could understand Latin. Now the common person could read. Universities were built. Many paintings included scenes of schools and universities, as well as students.

Antiquity was also an interest, and this made artists turn their focus on the form of the human body and perspective much like the Romans had.

Art was also more in demand. The smaller population (due to the Black Death) had more wealth to spend on art and the like. So the artisan class grew.

People were despaired at the amount of deaths during the plague, and most lost faith in the church. This humanism caused artists to focus on less religious subject matter.
