This story takes place during the carnage of World War I. I suppose the story could be compared to war. It is about a brother that is trying to make his younger sibling more like himself(what else is war usually about, but attacking a country because it is not like your own). It shows the danger of attempting to do so.

Doodle is compared to the scarlet Ibis, both find themselves in hostile environments that they cannot survive in. This could be seen as a comparison between soldiers that die in unfamiliar lands because of the war.

The war does not really symbolize anything, it is more of a paralell.
