can some PLEASE!! help me im completly stuck! thje question is, A pail eith 40 washers in it weighs 500 grams. the same pail with 20 washers weighs 420 grams. how much does the pail wiegh?? I am completly stuck plz plz plz help me!! THANX IN ADVANCE!!

340. 340 + 80 = 420, 340 + 80 x 2 = 500.

Weight of Pail = y
Weight of Washer = x
40x + y = 500
20x + y = 420
Subtract 20x from the bottom to get:
y = 420 – 20x
Plug-in (420 – 20x) for y to get:
40x + (420 – 20x) = 500
Simple Math:
20x + 420 = 500
20x = 80
x = 4
Plug-in 4 for x in either equation to get:
20(4) + y = 420
Simple Math:
y = 340
Therefore the Pail weighs 340 grams.
