Is there a free online or printable (with answers) test to see where a child is academically?

To see if she is at grade level? (going into 8th grade)

For free, online, printable tests, check out the Texas and Virginia schools websites (links below). For inexpensive test prep workbooks, look for “Spectrum Test Prep” at Amazon or any bookstore – they come in all grades, and are about $10. There are also a few companies that will sell you tests at various rates; I’ve listed a couple below.

Keep in mind that grade level really just means “where the child is on the conveyor-belt of institutional schooling” and is not really any measure of the child’s abilities, skills, or talents. Grade-level distinctions only serve to allow the teacher (or parent) to demonstrate to a third party that the child is learning something. They in no way serve the interests of the individual student, who instinctively knows whether or not he is learning to the best of his own ability. One of the joys of homeschooling is being able to move beyond the artificial constructs of “grade levels.”

Children can differ in their levels of proficiency and it has alot to do with their interests. One person can be 9th grade english and 4th grade math…

Anyway, Saxon math and Singapore math both have placement tests with answers and are printable.

Most online programs and software provided schools offer placement tests. Private and public schools also have a litmus test to determine each person’s average grade mastery. You might be able to obtain something from them as well.

Switched on Schoolhouse has an online diagnostic test to help you find the right level of their product. That should get you pretty close. http://www.aop.com/sos/

Yes, I believe so. There’s one at www.harcourt.org/saxon. Also, any curriculum you use should have a test like that.

Good Luck 😉
