People are so uniformed! The first answerer claimed that Public school students are tested every year! Maybe in some states, but in mine they are tested only three times, I think it’s in 4th, 7th and 10th grade, homeschoolers on the other hand must test yearly in my state.

Anyway, there are many choices for homeschoolers, in my state we can take the State Test, the same one the Public schools take, but since it isn’t offered yearly we have to use other options most years.

Here is a list of other nationally normed tests my state allows homeschoolers to use in order to satisfy the testing law, of course which one to use sometimes depends on the grade level (for example the SAT 1 and PSAT):

ACT and PACT assessment.

California Achievement Tests

California Diagnostic Test

Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills

Degrees of Reading Power

Iowa Tests of Basic Skills

Metropolitan Achievement Tests

National Achievement Test

Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT 1)

Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test (PSAT)

Stanford Achievement Test

Standford Early School Achievement Test

Test of Achievement and Proficiency

To find out more about the laws in your state, start at http://www.hslda.com , look at the left side of the screen and click on the words “In Your State”.

Ha ha ha! I just looked at the first answerer’s profile! Their “name” is “Confidence or just confusion” I’d say confusion!!!

Based on the wording of your question, it sounds like this is a state requirement that you need to meet. If so, the state may have a list of “approved” tests that you need to use, so check with your state homeschool org. to see what’s approved.

If the decision is up to you, there are plenty to choose from. Two of the most common are the ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills), which is now the ITED, and the SAT (Stanford Achievement Test, not the college one), both available from Bob Jones University Testing and Eval. (as long as you meet certain conditions). There’s also the CAT (California Achievement Test) and … oh, I’m drawing a blank right now, but I know there are a few others.

If this is state-mandated testing, I’m sure you’ll be able to find others in your area who are testing as well and they can help you out.

Our state recommends the Iowa or CAT (California) tests.

In response to the answer before mine, our state does not require a standardized test every year for public school. Public schools require an EOG (End of Grade) test until high school. In high school, there are EOC’s (End of Course) test for students who miss more than 3 classes or make below a certain grade level. The test in public school high school are an opportunity for students to improve their letter grade for the course.

We take the CAT’s adminstered by a certified teacher. But the kids here in FL can take any national test, including FL’s FCAT.

Probably the most common is the Stanford-Binet, used exclusively in California (of course, STANFORD is located there!)

It determines statine and percentile rank in English, Science, Math

If you are at least in 10th grade the SAT can be of benefit.

Doing 600 in each catagory at 10th grade level is pretty good.

You are expected to do better at 12th grade level.
