When student loans are in default, what other forms of financial aid is available?
I haven’t been to school in years and have 4 kids. I have been off and on state assistance and I’m tired. I want to go to school and get trained to do SOMETHING!!! Fix cars, build houses, SOMETHING! My student loans are in default and I only get $320 a month to take care of my family. We are homeless, have bad credit, and up against a wall. Please don’t leave any generic answers. I am looking for a way to improve the situation. I am looking for work, but have been unsuccessful. Help if you can. Thanks.

At your local Human Services office(family assistance) they should have some information on a program Vocational Rehabilitation. It is a federally funded program for the disabled/disadvantaged and they might be able to help you. Also contact your local college of choice and ask to speak with a financial aid COUNSELOR, not one of the office flunkies at the front desk, explain your situation and they might be able to help you find a scholarship that will help you. Look into some of your local battered womens shelters for information on programs available to mothers like you. There is amnesty offered occasionally for those in default and they will work with you on a repayment plan and maybe even get you out of default. Communicate with your loan company, if you havent been in default too long you may be able to get a forbearance on them if you work with them on developing a plan for repayment, even if it takes years to get it done. Consoladation under the William D Ford program will get your payment with one company so you done have 4 or 5 payments due a month. Good luck, I know its hard out there.

First, you need to contact your lender. If you don’t know who it is go here
http://www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/
This is a government site that can help you locate your loans. Explain that you are in default and need to find a way to get your loans in good standing. They can usually put your loans into a consolidation and them put the consolidation into forbearance ( unless you have used your allotted forbearance time). Once you get back into school, you can apply for an educational deferment ( were the goverment goes back to paying the interest on any subsidized loans.) It’s not an easy fix, but if your determined, you can make it happen.

you have lost eligibility for federal economic help. this skill which you won’t be able to get help at any college till you the two boost your GPA or boost your of completion value (despite the difficulty is for you.) besides the undeniable fact that, at Oakland or on the different college, you could document a economic help attraction. in case you have a stable explanation for doing so poorly, and have resolved despite subject concerns you had, then there’s a gamble your attraction must be granted. this is why the letter talks bearing directly to the appeals technique.
