Be very careful. From my expierience there is no good “private” student loan. The rates can be twice or even three times higher than fedral loans. Most are equal to or many points higher than the prime rate, this usually depends on your credit score.

If you are going to use one try to borrow the smallest amount that you can. You will get it paid off faster without getting burned with all the interest.

I took out a private loan and I now have a massive monthly payment for the next 20 years.

Work hard, get those scholarships and put some more research into government grants and loans.

Hello how are you? Well the first thing you should do is apply for scholarships and grants. This is because they are both sources of free college money that does not need to be paid back. Student loans should be last on the list if she can’t get a scholarship or grant. You can refer to my sources for more information about scholarships, grants and student loans. Good Luck.

If you are a parent, look into PLUS loans. They can be granted through private lenders, but are controlled by the US government. You can borrow the amount needed for tuition, room, board, books and travel expenses, minus any awards/scholarships received. Remember, this loan program is for PARENTS, not the students. The responsibility for repayment lies with the parents. The monies are paid directly to the school. Repayment starts 3 months after the first disbursement.
