Should I take up Gifted Education?

Recently I went to a recommended psychologist that specialises in Gifted children and adolesents for a psychometric assessment and after she recommended that I start taking Gifted and Talented (GATE) classes! I’m worried I won’t be good at it though because for nearly all my life at school I have been either an underachiver or average! Should I take up Gifted Education?

I am a teacher in a school devoted to bright and gifted children, plus my two daughters attend the school, plus I did my district’s GATE program (a pullout program) myself through 11th grade (ok, this was in the 70s and 80s), so I feel comfortable saying that YES you should go to GATE classes.

It’s not that the classes are harder, exactly. They are deeper, broader, and more engaging than a regular curriculum. They’ll ask you to think about things in challenging ways that perhaps you’re not used to. The fact that your grades weren’t all that great along the way is frankly irrelevant. Perhaps the material didn’t interest you or challenge you in a good way–like why study something that seems obvious, right? Also, hopefully, stuff that’s easy will be telescoped (you’ll move through it quickly) to the stuff that’s really interesting. You’ll find that there are other kids like you, so stuff you find interesting will be interesting to them as well–or different stuff but with the same intensity, if that makes sense.

Anyway, I think you can tell that I’m all for it. Good luck with this new chapter–I bet you have a blast.

Of coarse take it. Your grades dont matter in this area cuz your learning how to think critically. I was stuck in special ed for 6-7 years (because of a nasty teacher not my IQ or anything) but now im in gifted and it feels great to be around people who I dont have to explain things to. The test you took shows what you can do not what you have done.
