Turabian Research Papers

The Turabian writing style is one among the many academic writing styles that are used within the academic field to write research papers. The style dictates the manner in which Turabian style papers will be formatted and the kind of citations that will be used within the scholarly writing. Turabian writing style was designed by Kate Turabian, and it is meant to help students in citing their sources as well as formatting their academic papers.

The Turabian writing style is very similar in many aspects to the Chicago academic writing style. However, it has subtle differences that differentiate it from the Chicago

writing style. The only difference being that the Turabian style eliminates most features that are meant for publishing purposes. Thus, Turabian style papers are mostly academic papers that do not necessarily need to undergo publication.

Turabian style papers offer a little flexibility that allows students to choose between two styles of making citations within their Turabian style papers. However, many at times it is advisable for students to use the method selected by the assigning instructor. The first option of citing within Turabian style papers is through the use of endnotes and footnotes within the text in positions similar to those of other in-text citations. The use of notes requires the Turabian style papers to include a bibliography at on the last page of the academic paper. The second allowed method of citing within Turabian style papers includes the use of the parenthetical citation method which is similar to the citations done within MLA styled papers.

Turabian style papers using the parenthetical method require the incorporation of a reference list at the end of the academic paper on its last page. Turabian style papers’ end notes or foot notes should have full details of the sources represented by the superscript numbers in Arabic numerals. The endnotes or footnotes within Turabian style papers should indicate the name of the author of the source, the title of the source used, the place where the source was produced or published, the publishing company or house and the date that the source was produced or published.

The source’s title should be italicized within the end notes or foot notes. The bibliography list in Turabian style papers should also contain this information a similar order as it is presented within the footnotes or end notes. In cases of citing an edited book within Turabian style papers,

the name of the editor should also be included within the footnote or end note. In Turabian style papers the citation of encyclopedias and other popular publications can be done within the footnotes and end notes, but it is not necessary to place them in the bibliography list.

Numbering of Turabian style papers should be done both at the top and bottom corner of the paper on both sides. Large direct quotes of up to five sentences within Turabian style papers should be indented and place between the quote marks. The placement of the note numbers should be done in immediately after the text that is cited. All footnotes or end notes in Turabian style papers should be arranged in a numerically descending order whether at the end of each page where they appear or at the end of the academic paper as end notes.
