Informative Speech

Speeches are modes of establishing communication between a speaker and the audience. The purpose of establishing the communication as well as the audience may differ under various contexts. However, what is of importance is the ability to be able to establish proper communication and understanding.

The purpose of speaking determines the type of speech that an individual will offer. If the speech is meant to persuade or dissuade people, then that speech may be termed as a persuasive speech. On the other hand, a speech meant to inform the audience may be termed as an informative speech. The first process in writing an informative speech entails choosing the topic that carries the relevant information that should be passed on to the audience.

After selecting the topic for the informative speech, the writer should develop a thesis statement that explains briefly what you are going to talk about. This is a statement that can be at least one sentence, for example-“I am going to a talk about the effects of caffeine on your health”. After establishing the thesis the writer should then determine how brief or elaborate s/he will have to be, because this will depend on the time that speaker will be offered before the audience. The next step before writing an informative speech involves conducting an extensive research about the topic under highlight.

A good informative speech should not be lacking in terms of details. It should be comprehensive and detailed in a manner that will leave the audience fully informed beyond doubt. After the research the subsequent step in the informative speech writing should entail the careful choice of words based on considerations of the type of audience to be addressed. Unless informed otherwise, the writer of an informative speech should always assume that the audience completely knows nothing about the topic that will be spoken about. This means that the speaker will have to make a detailed introduction that can connect the topics origin to the present and direct issue under focus within the informative speech.

However, if the audience under consideration is a group of doctors or food scientist, it may be unnecessary to develop a lengthy introduction about the effects of caffeine on the body. After acquiring all the information required for informative speech writing, the author should create an outline of the speech that details all the key points that should be included. These points should be ordered in a logical sequence that is representative of the order that they shall take within the informative speech. After writing an appropriate introductory statement, the writer of the

informative speech should take up every point within the outline and expand it to make the information well elucidated.

After clearly expounding all the key points of the information, the writer of the informative speech should conclude the speech with a conclusive statement. The conclusion section within an informative speech simply outlines all the already mentioned information in a brief and concise manner. The conclusion should refer back to the introduction in some way so as to show the audience that the speaker has come full circle. The final activity after writing the informative speech, involves practicing the speech with timing so as to ensure it can be delivered in a smooth flow over the provided time.
