Well, why are they apartments when they are all together in the building that is built, with the parkway that you drive on and the driveway that you park on, as you put your suits in a garment bag and your garments into a suitcase?

because when it was in the process of being built, people would say ‘its a building’ and then the name just stuck??? mabye. i dont know.

It is “that which is built” – so it’s a building. Just like “that which is painted” is a painting 🙂

“-ing” can be used to show the result or product of a verb.

So in this sense, we get words like “building”, cotton “wadding”, “bunting”, and “drawing”.

You can thank Old and Middle English for this — they also left us “farthing” and “schilling”.
