It’s from the Latin vacuus, which was pronounced “va-q-us.” The word was just adapted from the Latin.

Joy M has the correct answer… it’s from the Latin.

Many latin root words have a double letter which actually denotes something… when you see “rrh” that means “to flow” so when you see blood flowing it is called a “hemorrhage” (“hemo means blood) so hemorrhage is latin for “blood that is flowing”
