“Buford, you incorrigible mutt!” yelled my roommate. “When it comes to cheese, you’re insatiable!” Buford was the team mascot who just happened to live in our dorm. One of Buford’s other attributes was his ability as a magician. There were times when dorm refrigerators would be raided. Most of the edible contents would be left in place except the cheese. For many years I regaled friends and family with stories of his foibles. And, so, when I returned for my 20 year college reunion, I was not at all surprised to find our old mascot’s name memorialized. When the new snack bar was erected on campus, it bore the name Buford’s Eats and Treats. I laughed when I saw the sign. Emblazoned for all to see was an enormous dog, holding a piece of cheese. The snack bar opened promptly every day at 12:00. It was perfect.
