Why does the media and others insist on calling a ‘lectern’ a ‘podium’?

Lectern: A stand that serves as a support for the notes or books of a speaker.

Podium: An elevated platform, as for an orchestra conductor or public speaker.

Especially since one could expect a speaker to stand ON a podium and BEHIND a lecturn, and perhaps both at the same time!

Geographical location of the medium in question, probably. The definitions are essentially the same, except podium does not specify what goes on the elevated platform.
