Why is it so hard for people?

to learn the difference between when to use then or than, or to/too/two, or buy/by/bye, or your/you’re, or there/their/they’re, or even accept and except? What happened to grammar skills? Do they not teach this in school anymore?

Oh my god. I can’t believe it. That person up there was just complaining about how no one can do this anymore, and then he (or she?) just used the wrong form of “its” (it should have been “it’s”). How sad. Basically, I just don’t think people pay attention that much, although I don’t see why people keep mixing up “accept” and “except”. I mean, I do see why, but I don’t see how they can’t have learned the difference. *sigh*

That is the English language.

Why is Knife not spelt like it is spoken “nife”

Why is Phone not spelt like it is spoken “fone”

They’re means “they are”

You’re means “you are”

The way things are going at the moment, we will be getting a new Dictionary with short words in it. I heard this on the New Zealand News a couple of months ago. This is because of text messages ….. B4U (before you). To me this stinks because I have no purpose in my job to use this language. And if my kid was going to school I would do something to ban it. Kids are not going to be learing like they used to.

Hope this helped.

I agree with you 100% if they are Americans. The English language is hard to learn as a second language because so many of our words sound the same.

It is still taught in school, but many stray from it once they are out of elementary school.

I took a grammar course in college because I needed the extra course. I wish it was mandatory for everyone!

Of course they teach it, but nobody’s listening anymore. What I love is when nobody in a room knows where the apostrophe goes. It makes me feel smart, even though I know everybody SHOULD know where the stupid apostrophe goes. I learned it in 5th grade.

I think that people just don’t find it important to spell things right. They are so used to communicate by sms or mail that what’s important for them is to be understood. Grammar is secondary.

They teach very little grammar, and few students read very much, so they aren’t regularly exposed to correct usage

nope they do not.. i was in honors english when they taught me those differences.. my friends who were in regular english never learned the differences.. so i guess its not being taught anymore.. they probably should because there are a lot of people who cannot spell the words correctly..
