On a topic would probably be more correct, though “in” a topic is usable. Most people would say “on” though.

As an example, you might say, “Course work in the field of physics.” Usually though if you’re specifically using the word “topic” then you’ll use “on” such as, “Course work on the topic of physics.”

coursework on a topic ……… for example …….. would “homework in bacon” sound right ? no . so you use “homework on bacon ” .,…. but in your question , it’s more of a matter of preference ….
