I think you mean “prima donna” It is Italian for “first lady”. It is also used to indicate the leading female singer in the opera company, the person to whom the prime roles would be given. The prima donna was normally, but not necessarily, a soprano. The corresponding term for the male lead (almost always a tenor) is “primo uomo”.

In opera, a prima donna is the lead female singer. Since many of these are quite driven, they often make extreme demands on everyone around them to get a better performance. o quote wikipedia: A person who considers himself or herself much more important than others, has high expectations of others and becomes angry when their standards or demands are not met.

Unfortunately many people just play the role and are more concerned with themselves than producing a work of art. So in slang, a prima donna is someone who is arrogant, makes a lot of demands, storms off a lot and is generally a drama-queen.

The expression is “prima donna” and actually refers to the lead ballerina in a ballet. More generally it refers to a person, usually female, who has an extremely highly over-rated view of herself.
