Why do they call it dumbwaiter at the hospital?

I can’t understand why they call it dumb? It is a sign on the door and it takes the food or whatever up I guess kind of like a little elevator.

They say that the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. You asked, Honey, and now you know.

Have you heard of a “Lazy Susan”? A revolving plate, that has nothing to do with any Susan – lazy or otherwise. Just a name that someone came up with, other people liked, so it stayed with us.

I think the guy from Quebec got the reason it was named a dumbwaiter correct, but I did you know that President Thomas Jefferson invented the dumbwaiter? He was an architect by trade and after he retired he designed a building and came up with this idea. Kinda cool huh???

well sweet one it doesnt seem to me that anyone with any sense would ask that question.. a dumb waiter is a place where u put stuff that has to be delivered to a certain place by elevator. so all u have to do it push a button.

You’ve got the idea for what it is… that’s the usual term for a food lift that’s too small for people to fit into (without squshing themselves horribly). It’s called “waiter” because it brings the food, and “dumb” because it doesn’t talk. (as in “deaf & dumb”)

So called because it answers all the purposes of a waiter, and is not possessed of an insolent tongue. Kinda makes sense….
