I can’t understand when I should use ON or IN

‘Walked in the direction of my house’.

‘Walked on the road towards my house’.

It depends on what you are trying to convey, you could say,”I walked on, in the direction of my house.” as well.

Since “direction” is used, then “in” is the appropriate choice.

Using “…IN the direction of…” sounds more participative than ON.
