Where does the phrase “I don’t give a rat’s a-s-s” come from?

My own personal theory is that it relates to the early fur-trade. Perhaps a rat’s pelt would have been considered a cheap/lesser fur and as such to insist that one wouldn’t even part with such inferior goods in exchange for something else suggests the origin of this phrase?

Anyone think this might be correct or have a better idea?

It’s believed that a rat was used in the expression because of the way people view the rodent (annoying and small).
