Question about the MGM logo, would help if you’re a big Latin buff….?

At the beginning of all those MGM flick’s we’ve all seen a thousand and one times, (you know with the big dramatic lion roar and stuff) if you look closley there’s a small latin inscription on the isignia… it say’s “ARS GRATIA ARIIS”. Does anybody know what this inscirption mean’s, or is it even Latin?

“ars artis gratia” = Latin for “Art for the Sake of Art”

Samuel Goldwyn Mayer rearranged the words for more balance in the logo!

Are you sure it’s not ARS GRATIA ARTIS? If so, it means “Art for art’s sake “.

It’s derives from 19 century movement, which affirmed that art was valuable as art, that artistic pursuits were their own justification and that art did not need moral justification — and indeed, was allowed to be morally subversive. As opposed to those who claimed that art should teach, make aware the masses and so on.

Oscar Wilde was one of the people who practiced it.

ars is conduct, skill, method, techinique, character

gratia is in order to, for the sake of

artis is skill again

so, something like, skill must be present for skillful work. This is how I put it together, so who knows!

Well, now you have what each word means so you can put it together how you like.

Wait I found it!! It is Art for the Sake of Art.
