Reefer is a spanish “loan” word –

possibly from Mexican Spanish “grifa”, for “marijuana”. or ‘grefa,’ ‘griffa,’ ‘griffo’ meaning marijuana user, apparently the same word as ‘grifo’ meaning curly-haired.
