If 1950-1959 is called the 50’s, and 1980-1989 is called the 80’s, then what do we call 2000-2010?

I heard this question on the radio one day, and the best answer came from a woman who remembered her mother referring to 1900-1920, as the “aughties” (I think she said something about a German reference to the number 0?).

Do you think “aughties” is a good term to refer to 2000-2010? Or what else would you say?

Hello there, how are you today?

I’m sorry for not getting back to you…I’ve not been online yet, this weekend until 5 mins. ago. Hope everything is going good for you. This is just my take on your question, but I would call this stretch of years…”the 20-odd years”. You know what I mean ? When you have two zeros in a 4-digit number like 2005 or 2007, they can be referred to as twenty-odd-five or twenty-odd-seven. Regarding a certain caliber size of a bullet 30-06, I’ve heard this number referred to as thirty-odd-six.

For example, the twin tower tragedy happened in “20-odd-one”. Get it ?

We met online on a site called “Yahoo Answers” in “20-odd-seven”, and in less than 3 years, it will be the year twenty-ten”.

So, I’m calling this decade the “20-odd-years” decade. Bye for now, girl. take care.

No I don’t think “aughties” is a good term.

WHY NOT?

Well, not many North Americans are familiar with the term. Only those with a good vocabulary would catch-on.

A common term is, “Turn of the century”.

Especially few years from now, as in:

At the turn of the century the World Trade Center was demolished by an act of terrorists.

Marilyn Vos Savant once suggested that since the word “naught” means zero, we should call them the “naughties.”
