What is a synonym for being sure of one’s self?

I am reading a passage from a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne and one of the character’s is not himself. He just does all of these praisworthy things so that he can look good for the public, he has no self-knowledge, he is all about his external self and is concerned with how the public views him. What would be a synonym for “not being one’s self?”

No it isnt. I am an atheist. While admittedly i can be stubjorn at times so can everyone including theists. Religion is not the only thing that can give you life. My life has meaning because of a beautiful girl that means everything to me (she’s catholic btw) and a great circle of friends. The only empty people arebpeople who think they need a religion as the only thing to give them purpose. They are the soulless ones that need help
