Does it bother anyone how a lot of people can’t spell?

I’m just wondering because it seems like every single time I read something words are misspelled or people are asking me how to spell words, and I’m talking about grown adults. Just wondering what you all thought.

I’m an English teacher so it does bother me 😉 What bugs me the most is when people spell “their” when they mean “there,” and similar errors.

YES! I have a better than average command of the English language. Despite that I am a poor speller. A dictionary has been a companion all my life. Nowadays,I rely on the electronic version more heavily than the hard copy version. I was taught by my parents and elementary school teachers that written and oral communications were markers by which my mind would be gauged, in the same manner as my clothing would label me. It is appalling and distressing to me when I encounter glaring grammar and spelling errors in a newspaper or main stream magazine. It is even more so when they appear in the several science and engineering magazines I regularly read. If these errors are obvious to me it must make those whose with good grammar and spelling skills wish to pull their hair out, literally. The English language is continuously evolving. Some of the changes are palatable to me, some are not. But I am accepting of them. Underlying the changes is a basic structure and it should not be violated. Part of that structure is spelling correctly.

The spell checker just flagged “gauge” and suggested “gage”. This is one of the words that is evolving. At present “gage” is relegated to the engineering community and “gauge” is used elsewhere. I suspect that soon “gauge” will be considered an archaic spelling. That’s OK as I’m on the way to being a fossil myself. LOL

Actually, I tend to be bothered by people who don’t understand grammar more than I am bothered by people who misspell words.

After all, great works like Beowulf were written without a regard to spelling. Then we have words like island. The only reason that word has an “s” in it was because people thought “iland” (the proper form) was misspelled and tried to fix it!

Yes! It drives me absolutely insane!!! I go to a very prestigious college and every class I am baffled at the inability of my fellow students to spell common, everyday words correctly!! My roommate has terrible writing skills, horrid grammar and is the WORST at spelling, however she is a math genius, so I just try to reassure myself that these people are here for a reason!

Yes it bothers me as well. Spelling bees were so important when I went to school. Now that people have spell check, no one cares anymore. It is just ridiculous how much it is tolerated.

It irritates me! I am always correcting notes and announcements that the supervisors put up at work!!! They should at least use spell check before posting anything!!

Of course it’s bothersome. A lot of times, however, misspellings online can be attributed to poor typing skills.
