It’s called Miami because the Miami Indians were Southern Michigan, Indiana, and Western Ohio (where Oxford is located) before European Settlement. The school was originally Miami Redskins but after legalities, they changed their names to Redhawks but retained the name. Miami University still to this day has a relationship with the tribe. University of Miami was just named after the city it resides in, they are copy cats. Boo.

They are named after the Miami Indians, who also lent their name to a nearby river. Denial of this heritage at Miami University is an on-going curiosity. They used to have a contract with the Miami Indians that enabled a native American mascot to be used but the contract was not renewed and they needed a new mascot.
