What road should I take?

I am a high school junior with above average grades. I have looked at colleges and majors since I was in 8th grade, and I think I have found what I want to do. I was wondering what steps I should take to become a high school teacher. Do I need to major in Education, or Secondary Education? I don’t really know what the process is. One of the universities that I want to apply to is Arizona State University, which has a college for education. What other colleges have good education programs? I don’t know what subject I would want to teach, but I am pretty good in the four major subjects: English, Math, History, Science. Is there a reason why I should teach one subject over the others?

Please help me get on my way to become a teacher. Thank you.

Teachers are regulated by the state so yours may be different than what I know, but here it is.

If you want to teach high school you will go through the college (at the university) of the subject you want to teach. Math goes to the college of arts and sciences for instance. Then you will go through the college of education to get your certification for teaching. If you teach elementary you go totally through the college of education and probably get a generalist degree to teach anything they through at you for those younger grades. It easier to get certified higher and go lower than the opposite.

Go for secondary math or science because these are diffcult majors to get and few will attempt them so they are always looking for people to teach these subjects and you will have no trouble getting a job quickly at the school you chose. You may have to search for a school in different cities to teach anything else.

I am not sure about other colleges with good education programs, but I am getting my degree in teaching too. Mine will be Elementary. Most schools will require you to go through the secondary education course work if you want to teach high school, that is if they have a separate curriculum for it, which most will. As far as what you want to teach, I would choose which one you feel passionate about. There is nothing worse than a teacher that’s not passionate about what they are teaching. If you are really interested in Arizona State go to their website and request information. And look a couple other schools also to see what programs they offer.
