Who would you rather employ out of these two degrees?

…To do a job involving perhaps law, or some kind of research or writing job.

Ok then…Someone with a degree in Classical Studies (ancient history/literature, philosophy, latin, greek) or someone with a degree in European Literature and Cultural Studies (analysing the best European literature in English translation, philosophy). Both have their degrees from the same fairly prestigious university.

Who would be more employable and worthy of a creative sort of job in your eyes if you were the employer? Thankyou!

Classical studies.

I have a friend who attended undergrad as a philosophy major and psychology minor at a fairly prestigious university, he’s now working at one of the top law firms in so cal. He plans on getting experience first and then attending law school in the future.

I think your best bet is like him is to major in Philosophy, and minor in something of your choice(whether it is classical or cultural).

I would rather higher someone with a cultural studies degree because the knowledge on various cultures today might prove to be more helpful to my business than studying something that old and may not apply anymore.

If I were an employer of some place involving law or writing I wouldn’t want either degree because the degrees listed above provide no information to me about whether or not you’ll be an asset to my company. When I hire someone, I want a sense that this person has the knowledge to be able to benefit my company, either with something I can see on paper or after conversing with the person. A degree in culture or history won’t do either. Those will only tell me that you can complete something. Just being honest.

I would probably take the person with the classics degree if forced to choose. The reason is that much of what passes for modern philosophy and literary criticism is just the spewing of neo-Marxist opinions, and I probably wouldn’t want to have to deal with someone in a business who’d been inundated with that sort of stuff for four years. But really, if you’re into either of these sorts of things, maybe consider doing something with modern foreign languages and literature in those languages, as the ability to speak several modern languages is in high demand.
