Whats the deal with Free College in California?

I know it was made as a way to deal with the baby boomer’s generation, but now that that has passed, does it still apply? What are the schools that you can get in for free, (after establishing residency).

At one time California had free tuition at State schools for residents but there are still books, fees, etc. I lived there 21 years ago but I was at a private school (seminary) so this did not apply to me. Since there have been several major earthquakes and other disasters since I was there, the tax structures may have changed again and the fee structure with it. Any Californians want to comment??

As far as I know, there is no absolutely free college in California, but I know that many of the UC’s technically have free TUITION for CA residents. However, they still charge what is euphemistically called “fees” which can be several thousand dollars per quarter. Community colleges in CA are really inexpensive for CA residents, but there is still some cost involved. The only way to get truly free education in CA (or anywhere else for that matter) is if you can get a lot of financial aid (Cal Grant, Pell Grant, scholarships)

Um, you can’t go to school for free. In California their state schools just prefer to take in-state kids for undergrad and kids from community colleges in CA looking to transfer because they have so many people from that state that want to go to school.
