what should a sophmore in college do during college?
I am a sophomore at carnegie mellon with GPA 3.5 with few ECs such as tennis lifting and cooking. How do I get an internship? Or should I volunteer?

You need to see your college advisor to determine exactly what you should take in your sophomore year, as this varies from college to college.
You will probably be able to choose some classes; be sure they are classes that will help you complete your general education studies so you can take more classes in your major and minor in your junior and senior years.
Your volunteer service will depend on your own interests. Rather then trying to do many things, I would advise you to do one or two things really well.

Surviving Carnegie-Mellon is a pretty good accomplishment right there. Don’t worry about filling your resume with artificial accomplishments. Look through the endless lists of student and service activities and see if there’s anything that particularly appeals to you. If there isn’t, just work on your present stuff, and don’t get intense.
There are a lot of volunteer opportunities in Pittsburgh, of course, but make sure that they don’t eat up your academic time.
