majors for becoming a pediatric nurse?

so, i am in the process of applying to colleges, and their asking about my “intended majors”.. and of course i am not positive about what i want to be or major in, but i am thinking about being a pediatric nurse.

what majors would i be taking? pre-nursing?

i know i have to be a registered nurse as well.. but all in all, would i be taking pre-nursing or something else? nd also, this is just for the application correct? they can’t really make you choose what you want to be right away do they? cuz im not even positive and its so confusing and frustrating.

any insights will be greatly appreciated. thanks<3

I’ve never heard of a “pre-nursing” major. You would just major in “nursing”. If you are attending a 4 year school, the first 2 years would be mostly general education courses (which you’d need in most any major). So, I would go ahead and declare Nursing as your major, take the classes recommended by your counselor and have a year or so to decide. Chances are by then, you’ll be closer to deciding on your future.

Best of luck to you. And – here’s some advice. Study hard and party not so hard. 🙂

There are TWO work arounds that you could look at if your heart is set on this school. Major in Bio and then find a Nurse Practitioner program that does an accelerated MSN/NP program for non-nursing majors. It’s about a 3 year program, but you get your BSN and your NP which could allow you to work in a Peds ward. You waste a year or two of your life doing it this way, but it can get you there. The other is to major in BIO with a PreMed/PrePA emphasis. After you graduate, you go and get a degree as a Physician Assistant. This may allow you to work in a Pediatric ward, though not as a nurse.

When you are applying, what you put on there isn’t something you’re locked into. When you go to orientation, though, they might have you and others who named the same major going to a meeting with the faculty from that department or something. You can put undecided, if you want to though. If you want to be a pediatric nurse, the proper major would be “nursing.” That’s the only major that will work to become a nurse. And whatever kind of nursing is your intended field, you all have to go through the same classes in nursing school.
