Sororities?

I am going to attend the University of Arizona next fall, and I am already planning on joining a sorority. I’m not quite sure how competitive the greek scene is at UofA, but I really want to know if it will be absolutely necessary for me to have a recommendation? All of the sororities claim it is optional, but you know how that goes…! I really don’t know anyone that has been in a sorority before to write a recommendation. Does anyone have any ideas or information that would be useful?

Do not join a sorority. I’ll tell you why.

In addition to your already expensive tuition, joining a sorority entails fees and dues. At my school to join one you have to pay 300 a month in fees and dues– that’s like paying to rent room or an apartment with a roommate!! and that’s doesn’t even include what you’d need to pay for gas, toiletries, personal expenses, etc.

Sororities have the highest levels of alcohol abuse (in addition to fraternities) on college campuses everywhere. If you aren’t much of a drinker or partier, you better get used to it because that is the lifestyle that you will be part of.

The volunteer work and honors you get and prestige can be earned by joining similar school groups on campus that do the same thing, except you don’t need to pay fees in order to do them. On your resume, noone cares that you were in a sorority, all they care about is what you did.

Instead of trying to get a recommendation for a sorority, why not get one for a scholarship or to get into the program you’re interested in? don’t waste the person’s time by asking for a recommendation for disastor.

You generally need a recommendation no matter where you go or what sorority you join they pretty much all require them. My advice is to look into finding a local alumnae chapter near where you live for each of the sororities at UA and then contact them about meeting up.
I would suggest offering to do some volunteer work with them or at least a nice lunch. Some way they can get to know you and make a personalized recommendation.
If you know anyone who is or has been in a sorority reach out to them, chances are they have friends from other sororities that can help you get a letter.
And ignore Anonymousgirl, joining a sorority was the best decision of my life it was difficult financially but I ended up getting an amazing paid internship last summer due to an alumni member I met from my sorority.
Have fun and good luck!
