Question about college, going back to finish your degree?

Wife dropped out of college with only 22 hours away from her 4yr degree in marketing back in the mid 1980’s. Since then she has worked for major marketing/advertising firms and has owned her own advertising company for 6 years. She wants to go back to school and get that diploma. Its been twenty+ years what can she expect, how many hours will she have to take? She can take a full course load she is just worried that it could take years if too many credits have dropped off. Any insight?

Unless your wife goes back to the same college she attended in the 80s, the chances of those credits still applying are unfortunately slim to none. Most colleges have an “expiration date” when it comes to carrying credits over, but it is possible if your wife attends the same college, she might be able to keep some. I would recommend she call the college she attended to see if this is possible. If not, she might have to begin the degree all over again.

Most undergraduate programs are around 120-150 credit hours total; most courses 3 credits each. If your wife were to attend part-time, it could take her almost 8 years to complete. Has she thought about taking online courses? Some of them offer 4 credit courses and she can complete the degree at her own pace.

It’s important to talk to the admissions and academics counselors at each institution. Many are willing to test incoming students on “practical knowledge” and award academic credit that way. With over 20 years experience, your wife would almost certainly qualify. I would definitely recommend looking into that. Good luck!
