What is this saying? I don’t understand… can someone put it in simpler terms please!?

I recieved an e-mail saying…

To become a professional forensic anthropologist you must enter a graduate program where one of more forensic anthropologists can give the training you need to earn a Ph.D. degree (4-6 years), a postdoctoral research program (1-2 years),three years in practice at a university, institution, FBI and other places, and a thorough grounding in human osteology, gross human anatomy and physiology, and a sound background of the history of the discipline and cases. Then you may take examinations, written and practical, administered by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. If passed, you are made a Diplomate of the ABFA (D-ABFA). During this time you will expected to attend the annual meetings of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and prepare a poster or talk.

so that means i have to go to school for 11 years in order for me to become a professional forensic anthropologist and work for the FBI? and at the end i have to prepare a speech or poster

No. It means that to get your “Professional” certification you must have demonstrated proficiency “in the field”. That’s what it means to be a professional. It isn’t about studying, it is about doing.

So to be a Diplomate you must:

¤earn PhD

¤work 2 years on research-based project (sponsored)

¤work 3+ years in professional environment (provide proof of accomplishments)

¤Pass board examinations

This is fairly typical for many fields of study.

looks like 4-6 years of school, then some type of program, then being an intern for 3 years on the job.

You will get your Ph. D. degree in the 4 to 6 years, but to become Diplomate of the ABFA you have to do the 1-2 years of postdoctoral research, and 3 years holding down a job as a “forensic anthropologist-in-training” before you can take the test to become the real thing.

there are only a few professional forensic anthropologists in THE NATION. Unless you have above a very high high school GPA and get accepted into a very prestigious school and maintain a very high GPA, your chances of making it into the FBI or working at this career are very slim. It is a very very tight program. And yes it’s 11+ years to make it if you even get accepted after that.
