What is the “Dean”, at a college?, or A Community and Technical College?

Are they like the big honcho boss or something? (also wondering if they make lots of money) 🙂

Main question being, what does dean mean? is that like the school principal?

thanks

Usually a dean is someone who is in charge of a division in college. The chairs are in charge of a department. The president or chancellor is in charge of the whole school.

Lets take sciences:

Biology Professor

Biology Department Chair

Dean of the Natural Sciences

President of the College.

In the department of Biology there are many Biology Professors. The Department is run by the Chair.

Biology is part of the College of Natural Sciences which may include Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Astronomy. Each Department has a Chair. The whole Division is Run by the Dean.

The Deans of their respective Divisions may be Dean of Natural Sciences, Dean of Engineering, Dean of Arts, Dean of Humanities, Dean of Agriculture etc.

In Charge of them may be the Chancellor or President. Maybe the college is part of a system of colleges. Let’s take the UCs for example. There is UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD, UC Davis, UCSB and so Forth. Each School has a Chancellor who is in charge. They all report to the President of the UC System. The president is the head honcho but he may have to report to the Board of Trustees or some council that oversees everything.

Such is the hierarchy. Hope that helps!
