What happens if I decide to drop out of grad school after a year and get a job instead?
I’m entering a Ph.D. program this fall. I keep thinking about how I’ve been just as happy doing jobs where all I need is a bachelor’s (I have an engineering degree, so it’s not like I have to go to grad school), and I’m not sure I have the drive to conqueor these knowledge towers in front of me. I’m also upset because my boyfriend will be starting a job 800 miles away at the same time I start school. Honestly, I want to give up on grad school and just go get a job in his city, but I already signed a lease for next year.

Sounds like you have the same jitters.
“Will I ever be able to go to grad school in the future if I drop out?”
A guaranteed admission is worth more than the possibility of one in the future (bird in the hand kind of thing). But if you are thinking of applying again at the same school it could seriously hurt your chances.
With regards to your boyfriend situation. Long distance relationships can be rough but they can work out. My girlfriend (now my wife) lived 500 miles away for over a year. If this is just a boyfriend I wouldn’t be making major life decisions like this around him- boyfriends (just like girlfriends) come and go.
Do what is best for your future. No more, no less.
It’s actually a common practice. Yes, you will be able to get back into school. But you’ll have some real-world application behind your coursework and with that a greater understanding. Also, if you are worried, get a full-time job and do your course work part-time. That would keep you in school and at a good paying job.
Has your bf committed to you? If not, don’t give up grad school so fast.
and $$$ does not always mean happiness
