Definitely get your books before class – it’s not a bad idea to read them before class too (at least the first couple chapters) but then again, some people I know never read their textbooks.

Paper, Pens, Pencils, (those are plural – more than one) a calculator, textbooks, eyeglasses, a calendar, your class schedule, special things for special classes (I was in a band class that some people didn’t bring an instrument to and a stats class that nobody brought a calculator to).

If you’re wearing athletic shoes and you’re going to be in class all day, drop a pair of socks in your bag. Changing socks half-way through a long day is very refreshing on sore feet. Some pain reliever (aspirin, Tylenol, etc…) for that terrible headache you’re going to get. Small snack of your choice (much cheaper at WalMart than the snack machine) Some cash for the drink machine. Girl products (’cause your new friend will have not thought about it and be in a panic)

Cell phone (turn it off before class! or Professor Butt may answer it for you), something to read (besides textbooks) for when you’re waiting between classes. Laptops are required for some classes, very helpful for others (don’t get caught sending IMs during class).

A campus map – for when your class isn’t where they said it was going to be and now you have 5 minutes to find room 322 in the Jone’s Building; and a couple seniors think it would be funny to send you over to Jone’s via the longest route possible….

First of all, you want to be comfortable your first day of college (physically and mentally) and you want to be relaxed. I find that the first day of school is probadly the most relaxing day of the entire semester up until the moment you receive all of your final grades from the registar.The first day of school is exciting because it marks a new beginning which carries great opportunities. Professors are usually relaxed, students are giddy and excited because there are no grades to fret over yet, and everyone is catching up with their friends and meeting new people. Enjoy your first day of college. I will never forget mine.

Bring something to write with (pen and a highlighter to highlight important test dates and important points that professor makes about the syllabus) and something to write on and a folder or binder to put your syllabi in.

Having a bulk of school supplies is not necessary because most Professors generally don’t start lecturing until the second day of class, when things are a little more settled, because some people drop the class after the syllabus is handed out and some add the class before the registration period is over which is usually after the first week of class. Some professors even dismiss class after discussing the syllabus, which usually only takes 15 minutes, so that’s really cool. However, if the professor is really serious and strict, they will hit the ground running and start lecturing the first day, so prepare your fingers to write notes. Professors will almost always give out homework/reading assignments the first day, so be prepared for that.

In between courses, bring an academic planner so that you can write down important dates for midterms, class presentations, final exams, assignments. You can get a idea of how much time you will have on any given day and create a study/time schedule accordingly. Some colleges offer a free schedule planner… look for those at the bookstore.

Have a nice comfy pair of walking shoes, a comfortable fitting outfit (dress according to the weather but be aware that some buildings may be too cold or too hot). Try not to look like a scary clueless freshman because upperclassmen may pick up on it and try to take advantage of that. If at all possible, go to each of your courses, get a feel of where everything is on campus before the first day of class. Meet up with your friends and make it a fun event. Remember, you are smart, cool, you can do this. Keep a positive attutide and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be calm, focus on mentally preparing yourself for the rest of the semester and try to meet new friends in all of your classes as well as outside of class. Keep an open-mind, put on your listening ears, and get prepared for the first day of the rest of your life.

Yeah, you will pretty much just need a notebook and something to write with. Maybe a folder to put papers in. On the first day most teachers will just hand-out and go over the syllabus. They won’t expect you to have your textbooks yet. Plus, some may tell you that it’s not really even necessary to buy the textbooks. Once you get the syllabus for each class you can see what you will need for each class so you can stay organized. Good luck on you first day!

Also, I would suggest looking online on www.half.com for your textbooks. They are normally MUCH cheaper and you can get expedited shipping so you get them faster.

Notebooks and pens are great, but you should also buy your books that you will be needing as well. The earlier you buy the better chance you’ll be able to get used copies (which are cheaper). Go to your college’s website and go to their bookstore webpage. It will tell you what to do from there. Good luck!

Besides some paper and pens, I would suggest you do your book shopping before your first day and take books for your first day classes with you. Sometimes the prof talks about the course texts.

All you need on the first day is a tablet of paper, a folder (or a tablet of paper with a folder pocket) and an ink pen. On the first day you’ll get your syllabus and your professors will tell you what books you’ll need.

Depending on what classes you have that day, take small, wire single subject notebooks for each course.

Also take pens and pencils, too.
